Canola Farmers Welcome New Cabinet

Prepared to work together to solve issues and seize opportunities facing farms

Winnipeg, MB – Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) welcomes the appointment of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet earlier today.

"As the national policy voice for Canada’s 43,000 canola farmers, we look forward to working with the new Cabinet on priority files for canola farmers," says Mike Ammeter, Chair of CCGA. “The unprecedented drought conditions of 2021 have highlighted the need for closer government-industry partnership as we look for ways to both solve issues facing the sector and ways to capitalize on its opportunities for long-term growth.”

Developed in Canada, canola is a hallmark of Canadian science and innovation. The crop has a strong record of contributing to Canada’s economy and environment. Canola is Canada’s most widely seeded crop and has been the number one source of farm revenue from crops for over a decade. Annually, the industry contributes $29.9 billion to the nation’s economy and provides for 207,000 Canadian jobs. In 2020, canola industry exports were valued at $11.9 billion.

CCGA congratulates Marie-Claude Bibeau on her reappointment as Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and looks forward to resuming work with her and her team on important files, including improving Business Risk Management (BRM) programs and reforming the Canada Grain Act and Canadian Grain Commission.

CCGA also congratulates Mary Ng on her appointment to Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, and Small Business and Economic Development, Steven Guilbeault as Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Gudie Hutchings as the Minister of Rural Economic Development.  The association anticipates future work with these Ministers on advancing opportunities for canola farmers that are based in science. This includes areas concerning international market access and development, the creation of policies and programming that recognize sustainable practices and promote the profitability of farms, and regulations that utilize canola-based biofuel.

"Canola farmers can see important growth opportunities ahead if they are able to respond to the various challenges that arise," says Rick White, President & CEO of CCGA. "We are ready to work with the new government to ensure farmers prosper over the long term and continue to play an important role in contributing to Canada’s economy and communities."

Canadian Canola Growers Association represents canola farmers on national and international issues, policies and programs that impact farm profitability and is an administrator of the Government of Canada’s Advance Payments Program.
