Keeping Canola Farmer Issues a Priority in Ottawa

Ottawa is a crowded space, so having boots on the ground is essential to advancing agricultural policy issues.

As the national voice for Canada’s 43,000 canola farmers, CCGA advocates for canola farmers’ interests and works diligently to bring their message to the forefront in Ottawa.

What does that look like?

Recently recognized by The Lobby Monitor as the third most active lobby organization in Canada in the first half of 2022, CCGA’s advocacy team registered 120 meetings with Members of Parliament, Senators, and senior political and departmental staff in the federal lobbyist registry. The team also submitted 16 submissions and appeared four times at various Standing Committees, all between January 1 and June 30.

Canola farmers thrive when there is a robust policy environment that reflects their needs. CCGA advocates for policy changes to ensure canola farmers remain competitive and profitable, are recognized for their sustainable practices, and have the tools they needed to be productive.

Five major policy areas CCGA is working in:

  1. The federal government’s fertilizer emissions reduction target
  2. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s Transformation Agenda
  3. Bill C-234 An Act to Amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act
  4. Diversifying markets in the Indo-Pacific and solving market access barriers
  5. The recently published Clean Fuel Regulations that support canola-based biofuel

CCGA’s work is never done, as agricultural policy continues to be impacted by an increasing number of government departments and voices. But by joining forces with like-minded partners, CCGA can more effectively increase awareness around key issues.

We are proud to be recognized as the third most active lobby organization in Canada in the first half of 2022. Our advocacy efforts will remain a key tool come this fall as we continue to bring the canola farmers’ voices to Ottawa to promote sensible, science-based, and productive policy that will enable farmers to prosper and meet the increasing demand for canola.
